What remains behind the repetition of brazen violence is the continuous and calibrated deployment of different techniques of power that involve the recycling of violence in various forms and continuous yet ad hoc negotiations by the state and the mining company with the affected communities that seek to contain the communities and limit the forms of resistance available to them on a day-to-day basis.

Orissa: Surviving against Odds

Kashipur's woes began with the displacement of a majority of its people from land and forests, they long had traditional rights to. Yet, despite their unevenly matched struggle against a government that remains indifferent, and against the sweeping tide of industrialisation, theirs remains a story of sustained agitation and hope that has now also encompassed disaffected tribals in other areas as well.

The bauxite rich Kashipur block of Orissa has long been a focus of some interest to major aluminium corporates. Its exploitation is now taking a sharp and ugly turn with the tribals fighting for their livelihood and homes and against the environmentally damaging industrial development being proposed and the state tacitly endorsing the development plans.
