December 27, 1980 GUINEA BISSAU Coup and After Alma Carolissen-Essack THE coup in Guinea Bissau on November 14 has brought into sharp focus the many problems a nearly independent state in Africa faces. These are the political problems resulting from the installation of a people's government as well as the economic difficulties which follow a long period of disorganisation. The leader of the coup, Major Joao Bernardo Vieira who was a guerilla leader during the war of liberation under the PA1GC and Prime Minister at the time of the coup, has suspended the People's Assembly and dissolved the Council of State and the Council of State Commissioners, The Constitution too has been suspended and a Council of the Revolution dominated by army officers has been instituted. The Council is composed exclusively of Guinean blacks who are believed to be opposed to the plans of a United Republic of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde.
