EUROCOMMUNISM-Whiff of Non-Conformism

SUDDENLY, 'Eurocommunism' appears to have arrived. The stirrings were already there for some years. Matters were on the point of coming to a head at last year's conference of the 29 communist.parties of Europe in Berlin: Eurocommunism strained hard to assert itself, and it needed some delicate behind-the-scene elbow-nudging for the conference to emerge with a unanimous 'document'. Meanwhile, though, other pressures have been at work. There is a gleam in the eye of the French Communist party's leadership. Everything is coming up roses for their domestic alliance with M Mitterand's socialists, so much so that a clear majority in next year's elections is being confidently predicted for it. The exigencies of the alliance demand that the party in France takes a postive stand on such issue' as personal freedom and multi-party democratic norms which exercise the nation's electorate. Thus the world has been treated to the extraordinary spectacle of official Communist party spokesmen addressing public rallies in Paris in condemnation of the jailing of political dissidents in the Soviet Union, and of the Soviet party
