How X Is Undermining Journalistic Practice in India

The changes that have been taking place with reference to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) have been speedy and, at times, absurd. The changes happening to this platform since its acquisition, especially the loss of blue checkmarks for many notable personalities, in the context of India’s complex news media landscape are analysed in this article. 

Ever since its acquisition by billionaire business person Elon Musk in October 2022, X has been a social media platform in flux. Apart from layoffs, the platform has undergone several operational and policy-related changes, including the restoration of controversial accounts, its rebranding as “X” as well as the introduction of paid subscriptions to get the blue checkmark. The latter change—under the Twitter Blue (now christened X Premium) service—has been key in transforming the very experience of the platform for all users. In India, it resulted in many notable personalities, including journalists, losing the blue checkmarks by April 2023. While the criterion for getting the checkmark under the erstwhile legacy programme was to be an “active, notable and authentic” personality, paid subscriptions to Premium or Premium+ plans—costing at least `650 a month or `6,800 a year—are now a prerequisite to get the same.
