Scheduled Caste Status for Dalit Muslims and Christians
The case of Dalit Muslims and Christians for being qualified as Scheduled Caste is obfuscated by a host of denials or fallacious arguments offered by their religious elites and by successive governments. Some answers are offered in this article to eight most frequently asked questions concerning the Dalit Muslim case for SC status.
An important case concerning some of the most marginalised citizens of our country is due to be heard in the coming days. On 11 July, the Supreme Court of India is supposed to hear a bunch of petitions arguing for Dalit Muslims and Dalit Christians to qualify for Scheduled Caste (SC) status. This piece hopes to offer a compendium of the main debates concerning this issue. An intervention report has also been submitted by the author to aid the Supreme Court.
