In order to understand why Tamil Nadu (TN) strongly opposes the centralised medical entrance exam of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), it is pertinent to take a look at the history that led up to the state’s strong opposition to this exam.
In 2010, the Medical Council of India (MCI) notified NEET as a single admission test to the degrees of bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (MBBS) and bachelor of dental surgery (BDS) courses across India.1 The TN government in the following year raised objections against this exam, arguing that NEET was an encroachment on the autonomy of the state (Hindu 2010). In 2012, the central exam for medical entrance was mandated in India for the first time (Economic Times 2012).
