Farm Laws 2020: Beginning of Reforms

This refers to the commentary “Repeal of the ‘Black Farm Laws’” by Praveen Jha (EPW, 29 January 2022).

Farm laws have rekindled the debate around agriculture in India. The stage of the debate has been occupied by political organisations, both old and new. It appears from the prevailing circumstances that India stands divided on this issue for a plethora of reasons. At the same time, there has been less or no discussion on issues like population growth, decreasing landholding of the farmers, dietary requirements of the population, and the ability of the Indian agriculture, as it stands today, to cater to the needs of the present and future generations.
