Remembering M S Gore (1921–2010)
With a humble persona and unmatched leadership, M S Gore was an eminent scholar and administrator. On his birth centenary, his strides in both academia and in leadership positions are detailed.
In my long academic career spanning almost five decades, I have not come across a more self-effacing and gentlemanly sociologist and social work professional than the late professor M S Gore, former principal of the Delhi School of Social Work, University of Delhi and former director of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. Gore was a living example of John Henry Newman’s definition of a gentleman: he never inflicted pain on anyone, he was tender towards the bashful and merciful towards the absurd, he never spoke of himself except when compelled and had no ears for slander, and he was as simple as he was forcible and as brief as he was decisive. I had the good fortune of working with him for some time and being in touch with him for three decades.
