Pandemic-aggravated Inaccessibility in School Education
Lack of access to disadvantaged minorities and discriminated social groups limits the gains.
Access to school education and the quality of outcomes are two important factors that have long-term implications on the lives and livelihoods of the people and the overall development of the economy. In this context, the two reports released by the Ministry of Education to assess the current state of school education and its performance at the national and state levels gain relevance. They highlight the gains made, the impact of the pandemic and the continued shortcomings in terms of access to school education, infrastructure, and gender and social disparities.
The first report titled “Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) 2021–22” has been an annual feature since 2018–19. The numbers show that the total enrolment in the school education system in the UDISE+ from pre-primary to higher secondary has touched a high of 26.5 crore in 2021–22. The total enrolment from primary to higher secondary levels is now 25.6 crore. However, boys continue to outnumber girls with the numbers being 13.28 crore and 12.28 crore, respectively.
