Sociopolitical Reading of a Tragedy in Kerala
Renewing the renaissance project with a socially egalitarian and secularising thrust is an urgent task.

Ahorrific incident of human sacrifice in Elanthoor, Pathanamthitta, Kerala has triggered discussions on supersti- tious beliefs and an alarming rise of its intensity in a state like Kerala which is generally considered as “progressive.” Reports suggest that one of the three culprits was an active sympathiser of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI[M]). This, along with the popular perception that Kerala is a left-hegemonic society, has prompted many to point fingers at the political left for its failure to take on social obscurantism. However, this will be a simplistic diagnosis of the situation.
