The Implications of India’s New President

.

On 21 June 2022, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) announced Droupadi Murmu—a tribal leader from Odisha—as its nominee for India’s 15th presidential elections. Ever since then, celebrations in diverse forms—prayers, rituals, drums, and dance—have not stopped in the ancestral village of the NDA presidential candidate in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. And as many remained hopeful, the true victory came about on 21 July—a momentous day for Indian history.

Crossing the 50% mark of the total valid votes, Murmu has now become India’s first-ever woman from the tribal community and the second female to occupy the country’s highest constitutional office. Rising to the topmost position—as India’s new President—at just the age of 64 years, Murmu will also be the youngest occupant of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
