Economic Worth of Homemakers
The Supreme Court’s recent decision recognising unpaid domestic and care work’s pecuniary value is welcome.

On 5 January 2021, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court issued a decision in Kirti v Oriental Insurance Company Ltd recognising the economic contribution of homemakers. The case was about Vinod and Poonam, a couple in their 20s, who were killed when hit by a car. They left behind two young daughters and Poonam was pregnant. Vinod’s parents sued for compensation under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. While the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal awarded `40 lakh, the Delhi High Court brought it down to `22 lakh. Hence, they appealed in the Supreme Court, which increased the compensation to `33 lakh.
