Coup in Uganda: Stepping Backwards?
The coup against Obote took place when he was in Singapore — just as Nkrumah was overthrown when he was in Peking. The coup has disturbed the stability and tranquillity — comparatively speaking — of the political systems in East Africa. Till Obote’s overthrow, all the leaders of government in East Africa were those who succeeded to power on independence. Of the three Presidents in East Africa, Obote has been the least secure, and has never quite succeeded in establishing himself as more than a factional leader. This is in sharp contrast to the positions of Nyerere and Kenyatta.
