Improving the Quality of Teaching

With reference to the editorial on school closures (EPW, 27 November 2021), it has to be pointed out that while attempts have been made to substantially improve the physical infrastructure in the government schools in Kerala, one of the lynchpins of good education—good, qualified, proactive teachers—has not received the attention it deserves.

With reference to the editorial on school closures (EPW, 27 November 2021), it has to be pointed out that while attempts have been made to substantially improve the physical infrastructure in the government schools in Kerala, one of the lynchpins of good education—good, qualified, proactive teachers—has not received the attention it deserves.

The use of the teaching community for non-academic duties like supervision of Public Service Commission exams, census and survey-related activities, and the onus placed on them for administering various non-academic student welfare programmes, etc, have, in another sense, prevented teachers from concentrating on their core duty—teaching.
