Medicine for the Few

In countries where health and medical care comes predominantly through private medicine and private doctors, it is usual for the representative associations of doctors to work closely with the private pharmaceutical industry on matters of mutual interest. The outstanding example of this is, of course, the close collaboration between the American Medical Association and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association of the US. The two have made common cause on a number of issues; they have fought shoulder to shoulder to protect the fabulous fees of specialists and to defeat any undue expansion of the public health services.
