Globalisation and the Indian Farmer
The article analyses the impact of globalisation on income and levels of living in the rural sector. It also discusses the changes in India’s stance on food security in global negotiations.
India is globalising. Economists believe that under benign conditions, it is an axiom that trade helps both parties. This article argues that this is not always so (Alagh 2019). In contrast, it is seen that recent policy initiatives for reform in the agricultural sector have reinforced slow growth. The article analyses the impact of globalisation, as initiated by trade reform, pushed by global pressures and domestic reform strategies, on income and levels of living in the rural sector. Changes in India’s stand on food security in global negotiations are also discussed.
