On a Cup of Tea and a Coconut Tree

Do we shrug off the existential heartburn on seeing a tree being axed, blaming it on the inevitable progression of things?

It is 2010. But it could be 2000. Or 2030. Or even 1990. We were anthropocentric then. We are anthropocentric now. And will remain so till we turn into the very trees that we displace. The papers in the morning spoke of little children hugging the trees along Nepean Sea Road to save them from being cut for a road widening project. While these kids in South Bombay engrossed us with second page headlines, dozens of trees along Andheri JP Road became fresh stumps overnight, so more cars could stream by on either side of the middle-of-the-road metro project. I could not sleep all night wondering what my take on the matter should be.
