Assam and the NRC
Deepankar Basu and Debarshi Das, in their article “Assam’s Politics and the NRC” (EPW, 1 February 2020), have raised a few critical issues regarding the fundamental flaws in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updating process in Assam and emphasised building an alternative narrative. Their article is primarily a response to my article titled, “Assam’s 2019 Verdict and the Anti-CAB Mobilisations” (EPW, 28 December 2019).
Deepankar Basu and Debarshi Das, in their article “Assam’s Politics and the NRC” (EPW, 1 February 2020), have raised a few critical issues regarding the fundamental flaws in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updating process in Assam and emphasised building an alternative narrative. Their article is primarily a response to my article titled, “Assam’s 2019 Verdict and the Anti-CAB Mobilisations” (EPW, 28 December 2019). In the said article, the authors maintain that I had “veered away from the NRC” (p 62) as I focused more on anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) and anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protests. The authors have, nonetheless, thrown in a rider that, “This shift was not entirely unjustified, for the article started with the question as to why the anti-CAB protests did not appear to affect the BJP’s performance in the 2019 parliamentary election” (p 62).
