Power Looms in Maharashtra
Power looms are the largest producers of cloth in India, but in recent years, some policy decisions seem to have affected its effective functioning. The current crisis of this sector in Maharashtra, the state which has the largest number of power looms in the country, is examined.
Since the early 1990s, the dominant paradigm of economic growth in India has arguably been technology- and capital-intensive, employment unfriendly, services-driven, and narrowly centred around a handful of megacities, which are hothouses of global connectivity and elite consumption, but not of broad-based development. To this reigning paradigm of growth, the power loom sector, central to India’s textile industry, could, in principle, represent a model
of industrialisation which would be a living alternative as a manufacturing sector that provides jobs to thousands of unskilled workers, anchors the growth of small towns, supports a class of small but robust entrepreneurs, and simultaneously contributes to growing exports of textiles.
