Reclaiming the Republic
.
Political development in contemporary India has compelled the making of a fresh claim on the Indian Republic. The Indian Republic with its egalitarian basis in the philosophy of the Constitution has been continuously subjected to the crises that are manifested in intense forms of poverty and inequality, and new forms of destitution. The crises are evident in the saturation and complete suppression of the freedom of thought and expression and the right to a dignified life and social security. The accumulation of profit has also led to the corresponding accumulation of crises for the Republic, which even public institutions have not been able to minimise. Citizens’ mobilisation through electoral democracy and concrete action plans can together work as an effective bulwark in arresting the growth of the increasing use of money and multiple manipulations that seem to have encircled our public institutions.
