It has been assumed to be self-evident that it is a tragic irony that the fiercest communal massacre since Independence should have occurred in the Gandhi Birth Centenary Year. In a sense it is. But it also needs to be considered seriously whether some of the political attitudes which originated in the Congress under Gandhi have not contributed to recurring communal violence.
