On 19 January 2018, Bhopal—the capital of Madhya Pradesh (MP)—witnessed a commemoration. It was in observance of the 10th death anniversary of a 14-year-old Pardhi girl from the bastis (settlements) of Bhopal. Tinti Bai had been forced to commit suicide after being abused by the police (Madan 2008). On 20 November 2017, another young Pardhi woman Indramal Bai succumbed to burn injuries she inflicted on herself following relentless police harassment. She became another victim of institutional murder by the state and the police (Kractivism 2017).
In the period between these two totally avoidable loss of lives there have been many others who have been forced into a corner with their dignity and hope, squeezed out of their precarious lives and life situations. Extortion demands, illegal detention, arbitrary arrests and custodial violence are the norm.
