The impending royal wedding shows that the monarchy has come to terms with the changing times.
Meghan Markle is not the first American divorcee to cross the Atlantic to tie the knot with an heir to the British throne. It was Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American socialite, whose affair, with the presumptive British heir Prince Edward, had scandalised the monarchy in the 1930s. What is today being hailed as a breath of fresh air in an anachronistic institution was deemed a scandal back then.
Edward had ascended the throne in 1936 after the death of his father George V.It is said that George V was so vexed by Edward’s affair with Simpson that he hoped against the law that the reins somehow bypass Edward to George’s younger son, Albert. Edward would ruin the monarchy within a year, he thought.
