Nearly four decades of globalisation have altered several fundamental principles of the way in which the world economy and politics are organised. The freedom with which capital transcends national boundaries in the contemporary world, altering property relations and labour processes, makes it necessary to rethink the political economy of capitalism, both globally and within the boundaries of nation states. It is of no surprise that scholars are revisiting the fundamental Marxian ideas regarding paths of developments in nations and societies, often radically reinterpreting them, in trying to make sense of contemporary development. The agrarian question, one of the very original contribution of Karl Marx and the followers of the Marxist method, is very much at the centre of this discourse. The exercise has thrown up divergent views, which are bold and provocative, and frequently in disagreement with each other. This book, therefore, is a timely attempt to present the various strands of the emerging body of thought.
