Why the Court Intervened in Indian Cricket
In January 2017, the Supreme Court sought to hold the Board of Control for Cricket in India to account. The Court and the public, albeit separate from one another, wish to see theBCCI function transparently and be accountable not only to the public exchequer but also to the average cricket fan and citizen.
Much has been written about the protracted struggle between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Supreme Court, which in January 2017 resulted in the appointment of a court-appointed committee of administrators to oversee cricket administration. One of the key issues in this saga is the organisational nature of the BCCI and whether it performs a “public” function which needs to be regulated by the state. In this article, I examine this question by looking very briefly at the BCCI’s history, and the interventions by the Supreme Court regarding the cricket board’s functioning.
