On 9 October 2016, an important India–Australia link ended with the death of Jayaprakash Narayan’s now little remembered co-biographer, Allan Scarfe.
Scarfe was born in March 1931 and met Wendy when they were undertaking secondary teacher studies at the University of Melbourne. They married in January 1955, soon after graduation. Following a short stint of teaching in schools in Melbourne, “eager for experience,” they left their teaching jobs, travelling to England for wider experience. While there, they met a London-based Indian jute merchant. This meeting was to change the course of their lives. When Babulal Sethia came to know of their “zest for touring,” he told them that
