Shyam Bhatia is one of the first Indians to venture into the unknown and dangerous regions of the world as an accredited foreign correspondent. On the back of a fairly privileged upbringing—Doon School, Leighton Park, Reading and Oxford—with a parent as the editor of The Tribune in Chandigarh, Bhatia talked and wrote his way into becoming an intern in The Times in London. In 1974, when India burst into the nuclear world, Bhatia was doing his postgraduation in Oxford and he seized the opportunity to write a story on why India burst the bomb that finally got published in The Times. An interview over lunch (described prosaically, a style that seems to adhere to Bhatia) with Louis Heren, foreign affairs editor of The Times, followed and that launched him into the newspaper world.
