Colours of Violence in West Bengal
In the wake of the assembly elections in West Bengal in May 2016, instances of violence have been reported from different parts of West Bengal. In most cases, fingers have been pointed at the ruling party, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), for instigating politics of vendetta. However, no big political party is free from such politics.

Very recently, Panigobra village in Basirhat, North 24 Parganas district witnessed wanton violence in which cadres of both the Communist Party of India (Marxist)—CPI(M)—and the TMC were actively involved. The CPI(M) won the assembly seat in the Basirhat North constituency by a narrow margin. It is reported that two cadres of the CPI(M) attacked A T M Abdulla (Rony), former member of legislative assembly of the TMC, from the victory procession of the CPI(M). This reportedly acted as a catalyst for the violence. At least 30 houses of the supporters of both the parties were burnt. The area is littered with ashes and dead cattle, ducks, and hens.
