‘I’ll Have One Customised Baby, Please, Thank You’
The US Patent and Trademark Office recently granted a patent for a technology that would let prospective parents specify the traits of their offspring, from health risks to eye colour.
Imagine a world with a baby market. Any parent(s) looking to have a child can stroll in and specify preferences pertaining to physical characteristics, health, and even potential future careers. Subject to successful permutations and combinations, probabilities governing scientific applications and maybe even a little bit of luck, the parents are likely to soon hold a baby they practically designed the way we design luxury goods and accessories.
The proposition may sound absurd or akin to the plot of a dystopian sci-fi movie. However, following a nod by the US Patent and Trademark Office, this seemingly far-fetched and liberally imaginative prospect is now a virtual reality.
