US-India Ties Need a Reset

India needs to reset its ties with the US so that they dovetail with our agenda of development.

When the germane seeds of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States were sown in Washington discreetly by Indian officials at the beginning of 2016, it was to be a full-bodied “state visit.” However, by the time the reluctant US administration got around to reconciling with the idea, it got whittled down to a “working visit.” A working visit is an occasion to transact business sans protocol frills or a Madison-Square-Garden type “rock star” event. The Indians settled for what was on offer. The two leaders met for an hour, followed later by a “working lunch.”
