Mercy Plea Rejected by Gandhi's India
I am saddened to read that the President of “Mahatma Gandhi’s” India could not save the life of Yakub Memon. Also, I am saddened to read that those who wanted to see that his life is taken away on his birthday are like those “beings” in the H G Wells’ novel, Island of Dr Moreau. Those “beings” always go back to their original mental roots and can never be changed. The biggest challenge for the leadership of India has been how to change such people.

Those “beings” always go back to their original mental roots and can never be changed. The biggest challenge for the leadership of India has been how to change such people. We can pay all sorts of glorious homage to another President of India, A P J Abdul Kalam, but that homage does not carry any weight if we have no regrets over the capital punishment to Yakub Memon. Still, just like the movie Dead Man Walking, those who are against capital punishment should continue the struggle. The probability that capital punishment is always unjust is very high. The error of punishing a person who is not guilty is more serious than the error of not punishing a guilty person.
