Reimposing Hinduism

Teltumbde “Ghar Wapsi: Welcome to the Hellhole of Hinduism” (EPW, 3 January 2015) where he rightly denounces the attempt made by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its offsprings like the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal to “reconvert” the marginalised communities into the discriminatory folds of Hinduism.

However important the attempt to “bring back” seems for the RSS, educated tribal youth from Madhya Pradesh do not seem to support it. Students from Chhattisgarh living in Maharashtra, with whom I interacted during my fieldwork, described how ghar wapsi was pushed on the weak and the victimised. They said that they do not want to go back to their homes because they want to stay away from “spiritual activities” imposed on them by the VHP. One of them told me, “We were forced to participate in religious events like Ganpati puja, Navratri and Sanskrit classes held by VHP cadres.”
