Tapan Raychaudhuri (1926-2014)

A Personal Tribute

Tapan Raychaudhuri was a scholar of deep erudition and a pioneer in exploring new paths and perspectives. A builder of institutions, he will be remembered by generations of students as an accessible teacher and supportive mentor.

Tapan Raychaudhuri, distinguished historian and teacher, wonderful storyteller and generous friend to so many whom he met in countries across the world in the course of his long and illustrious career, passed away last November, at the age of 88. Tapan da—as he was known to generations of students as well as his younger colleagues and friends—is survived by his wife, Hashi di, his daughter, Sukanya, and his granddaughter, Lila. With them, all of those whose lives he touched will mourn and miss his gentle curiosity and engagement, his deceptively light touch, his erudition and his guidance.
