A Balkanised Iraq?
I write this letter apropos your editorial “The Responsibility for Iraq” (EPW, 28 June 2014). The present Iraqi crisis – more suitably designated as the west Asian crisis – is largely an outcome of the old divide and rule policy of colonialism, which is now being tactically executed by the US. The Iraqi government under Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has also been unable to earn the trust of its own people, who are now unfortunately being looked at more as sectarian groups by the polity.

The need of the hour is international support to the Iraqi people by providing medical and food assistance to those affected in the civil war waged by the “Islamic State” (IS) and asylum for the refugees displaced by the conflicts in northern Iraq. The international community should also ponder about helping the Iraqi state overcome the IS militarily. A Balkanised Iraq will be a fertile ground for sectarian interests, terrorism and a threat to neighbouring countries.
