(Mis)understanding Goa

Shrouded in stereotypical images, Goa is the archetype of the misunderstood smaller region.

With its relatively high per capita income, a fairly decent (with some exceptions) brand image in the rest of India and beyond, and above-average social indices that local governments have been boasting of since the 1980s, things must be pretty cool for a state like Goa, one would think.

Hardly so.
