Scholars working on international migration and the Indian diaspora invariably find reliable quantitative data hard to come by. They largely depend upon guesstimates, impressionistic observations, anecdotal narratives, and at best small-scale ethnographic studies. Obviously, they are seldom confident in arriving at empirical generalisations or in offering useful policy inputs.
