I find myself deeply troubled by the cacophony of sound bytes and shrill demands for death penalty for the Delhi bus gang rapists. We need to ask the question – will a death penalty solve the problem? Can it guarantee that there will be no more rapes?

I find myself deeply troubled by the cacophony of sound bytes and shrill demands for death penalty for the Delhi bus gang rapists. We need to ask the question – will a death penalty solve the problem? Can it guarantee that there will be no more rapes?

To my mind, the problems behind the phenomena of rape, be it this or any other, are embedded in a complex set of social, cultural, economic, political, patriarchal, feudal practices which span both geographic, national/international, time and space boundaries. The longer term solutions therefore will eventually have to be sought in our educational, familial, social-religious customs and traditions, as much as in our legal and other institutions and frameworks.
