Muslims in Urban UP

This is with reference to the letter from Shahidur Rashid Talukdar (“Reservation for Muslims”, EPW, 3 November 2012) on the elections to the urban local bodies (ULBs) in Uttar Pradesh (UP). While the Muslim population is 33% plus in urban places, our findings indicate that in about one-third of ULBs in UP, the Muslim share is well above 33%. The share of Muslim representation in these bodies is between 40% and 100%. Muslim representation is 40-60% in 38 nagar palika parishads, 60-80% in 25 and 80-100% in 5.

In 423 nagar panchayats, Muslim representation is 40-60% in 79, 60-80% in 37 and 80-100% in 27.

Instead of being defensive, one should be pleased to see these trends as an indication of the Muslim community extricating itself from the “minority syndrome” and enjoying the support of all sections of society.
