Trajectories of the Transgender
The Supreme Court has issued notices to the centre and state governments asking for responses on why such a category as "third sex" should not be created for transgender people. The question starts from an inappropriate positioning of establishing hierarchies in gender and implied gender roles. Mainstreaming the so-called "sexual minorities" by creating a separate category will lead to stigma and discrimination, rather than encourage pluralistic expressions in gender.
The recent Supreme Court notices to the central and state governments asking why the transgenders should not be considered as a third sex raise a number of social, economic and public health concerns. The question has to be posited differently given the multidimensional transgender community considerations. The question starts from an inappropriate positioning of establishing hierarchies in gender and implied gender roles. Already there is a struggle to break away from the binaries of gender. Setting dispositioned trajectories to further obfuscate the gender constructs will pose serious limitations to the understanding of such a complex issue and lead to further alienation of this community. Let us explore the three major dimensions here.
