Unfair to Ramdev
Having waited with anticipation for EPW’s analysis on the Baba Ramdev episode, I write to convey my dismay over the perfunctory manner in which the event has been dealt with in the editorial “A Demagogue, the State and Civil Society” (EPW, 11 June 2011). While it is fine to be oriented to the “Left”, ex cathedra censure of views and actions perceived as impermissible will just not do.

Baba Ramdev’s followers are branded “gullible believers”. How and why is it that to the modern Indians (sic), the beliefs of the unsophisticated Indians always appear self-destructive, meriting censure and stereotyping?
