This refers to the editorial “What ‘Movement’ Is This Anyway?” (EPW, 16 April 2011). In a world where people believe that violence is the best way to achieve their demand, Anna Hazare shows that non-violence is still relevant. His fast unto death against corruption is a glowing example of the relevance of Gandhian values and tactics. It is unfortunate that most political leaders forget their duty as representatives of the people soon after their election victory.

It is unfortunate that most political leaders forget their duty as representatives of the people soon after their election victory. The fact that the Lokpal Bill has been pending for 42 long years is a clear example of shameful political inactivity on this issue. The agitation at Jantar Mantar in Delhi may have been held sans peasants, industrial workers and the unorganised proletariat but the movement has been successful to the extent that at least a bill may be introduced which can check corruption, as well as the untrammelled powers of the political class.
