From 50 Years Ago: Absurd Pretence.

Editorial from Volume XII, No. 32, August 6, 1960.

The manner in which the pretence of fact-finding is being kept up by both India and China on the question of the border is rather pitiful...

The pity of it all is that we – who have been the losers by the Chinese aggression – are having to co-operate in the maintenanceof this pretence. For Peking, this is a rare diplomatic triumph; for us, it is a rather transparent substitute for absence of policy. New Delhi simply has not been able to make up its mind about what to do next, and in the absence of such a decision, the absurd conversations between the officials of the two countries are hopefully expected to serve as an effective camouflage for bankruptcy of thought.
