Violating Workers' Rights, Targeting Students

Ostensibly, such a course of action was deemed fit in view of the gherao of JNU’s registrar by students on February 19, 2007. However, the gherao by students cannot be viewed in isolation but ought to be viewed in its proper context: student anger at the mistreatment and exploitation of contract workers in JNU. The issue had resulted in a three-month long agitation by the JNUSU and students. It was when the administration began to procrastinate, warning the students to stop the agitation, tore posters put up by the students that highlighted the non-payment of statutory minimum wages, and non-compliance with provisions of the Contract Labour Act and other laws, that students gheraoed the registrar in protest to force the JNU administration to come clean.
