It is widely acknowledged that the Indian pharmaceutical industry is where it is today because of the Indian Patents Act (IPA) of 1970. The financial success of the pharma companies, however, stands in sharp contrast to the total failure to ensure affordable prices of medicines for the majority of Indians. A task force, set up at the initiative of the prime minister, has been grappling with this challenge without stifling the global ambitions of Indian pharma. It has been seeking a consensus, but given the lack of a countervailing force in the form of a strong consumer movement, the viewpoint of industry associations
