Lessons from Latur

Six years after the 1993 earthquake, Maharashtra government officially declared relief and rehabilitation operations 'complete' in the devastated districts. However, a visit to these areas reveals the gaps between official claims and ground realities. Most rehabilitation work has ignored people's basic needs. Healing the physical and emotional trauma that has affected most people, especially women, remains to be addresed.
