Greenough brings into focus an important dimension of contemporary Indian culture in his essay on the Crafts Museum. The promotion of handicrafts through such institutions, funded and run by central as well as state governments, is undoubtedly one of the important elements in the image of the nation projected both in India and abroad. The museum director's anxiety about the dangers of craftspeople from different parts of the country being influenced by each other and thereby losing their organic ties totheiroriginalcraft(p238)indicateselcarly the sanctuarian ideology that underlies the handicrafts institution. That such efforts to control and preserve are nevertheless not entirely successful is indicated by the instance of a Manipuri potter experimenting with ironwork after watching a Lobar from Madhya Pradesh at work (pp 236-37).
