In the worst affected villages, over 70 per cent had posttraumatic stress disorder, a condition which occurs in populations which have. been subjected to disasters. It is important to stress .that these are not conditions which will disappear. They will persist and permanently affect the lives of these people if they are not treated. Activists in the area and health workers feel that the amount allocated by the government for medical relief so far is not only inadequate but is being frittered away on unimaginative and ill thought-out measures. There has been no attempt to draw up a comprehensive medicare and psychotherapy programme and set up adequate facilities. Clearly, Latur is no longer a major political concern.
