A Critique of Its Functioning Khalid B Sayeed Even as momentous political shifts are underway in many parts of the world the American model of democracy with its adjunct, the market system, has been presented as an alternative worth emulating. However, in spite of its facade of stability there is a dissenting view that all is not well with the American democratic model. True, the American system continues to process claims efficiently into policy outputs but analysis of voter turnout, the information level of the electorate, poverty levels, racial discrimination, corrupt practices and the functioning of interest groups suggests that considerable sections of American citizens may become progressively disaffected.
