Decline of Backroom Politics THOUGH the revolt by the Jan Morcha group against the Janata Dal leadership, which started with the resignation of its principal members Arun Nehru, Arif Mohammad Khan and Sat pal Malik from their respective party posts and their decision along with sundry others not to contest elections, has for the present been suspended, a certain significance attaches to the development. The revolt, voiced in high moral tone, is clearly a direct response to the group's growing redundance within the party. The Jan Morcha being numerically negligible its decision is of little political consequence to the party. What however invests it with significance is that it gives expression to the changing terms of politics in the country and the relative unimportance of those outside the Congress who hold the middle ground. This change has reduced it, in a little over three years since its formation, from being the spearhead of the anti- Congress centrist alternative to being a rump within this alternative.
