The reception to Nelson Mandela after his release from 27 years of imprisonment could have been an appropriate occasion for the Left Front government to grant amnesty to the political prisoners. In fact this request was voiced by a large number of writers, artists and journalists in a statement issued in Calcutta on the eve of the reception. They reminded the government that incarceration of people for long periods without trial was not only inhuman, but went against the principles 0f justice and democratic norms. The APDR (Association for the Protection of Democratic Rights) which has been at the forefront of the struggle for the release of political prisoners in West Bengal also appealed to the government with a similar request, giving details about the cases of the 26 prisoners. As usual, all these appeals have fallen on the deaf ears of the Left Front government.
